Last mile: waar is de ingang?

Bestaande navigatie-apps zijn nog niet nauwkeurig genoeg en ook niet altijd up-to-date. En ben je eenmaal (dichtbij) je bestemming, hoe vind je dan het juiste huisnummer, de ingang van een gebouw of het knopje van de lift? Juist deze ‘micronavigatie’ of ‘last mile’ is heel lastig als je weinig of niets ziet. Om daarbij te helpen heeft het Bartiméus Fonds innovators en experts in toegankelijkheid opgeroepen om mee te doen aan de Innovation Challenge de ‘last mile’.

27 inzendingen, 1 winnaar en 1 runner-up

Het enthousiasme voor de challenge was groot. We ontvingen in totaal maar liefst 27 verfrissende en professionele inzendingen. Vijf genomineerden mochten hun inzending pitchen en op basis daarvan heeft de jury Navishare als winnaar gekozen en Oorion als veelbelovende runner-up!

Winnaar: Navishare

Het Amerikaanse Navishare gaat met de financiële steun van het Bartiméus Fonds hun app verder verbeteren en verfijnen voor mensen met een visuele beperking. Deze app brengt de omgeving  in kaart en navigeert de gebruiker naar z’n eindbestemming. Ook is het mogelijk om zelf routes toe te voegen in de app. Daarbij ontwikkelt Navishare een houder voor de smartphone zodat de gebruiker z’n handen vrij heeft en de app volledig via voice over of via een afstandsbediening kan bedienen.

Runner-up: OOrion

Ook runner-up Oorion gaat hun reeds ontwikkelde app doorontwikkelen met onze bijdrage. De huidige app kan elementen en obstakels in de binnenruimte lokaliseren. De app maakt daarbij gebruik van geluiden en trillingen van de smartphone. Met de extra financiële steun van het Bartiméus Fonds wil Oorion deze app ook geschikt maken voor gebruik in de buitenruimte.

People with visual impairments usually cannot independently ride bicycles or drive cars. Therefore, they often rely on public transportation. But navigating the last meters to a destination can be a significant challenge for the 300,000 people in the Netherlands who are blind or visually impaired.

Last mil: where is the entrance?

Existing navigation apps are not yet accurate enough and not always up-to-date. And once you are (near) your destination, how do you find the right house number, the entrance to a building, or the button for the elevator? It is precisely this ‘micronavigation’ or ‘last mile’ that is very difficult when you have little or no vision. To assist with this, the Bartiméus Fund called upon innovators and accessibility experts to participate in the Innovation Challenge ‘last mile’.

27 submissions, 1 winner, and 1 runner-up

The enthusiasm for the challenge was great. We received a total of 27 refreshing and professional submissions. Five nominees were allowed to pitch their submissions, and based on that, the jury chose Navishare as the winner and Oorion as a promising runner-up!

Winner: Navishare

With the financial support of the Bartiméus Fund, the American Navishare will further improve and refine their app for people with visual impairments. This app maps the environment and navigates the user to their destination. It is also possible to add custom routes in the app. In addition, Navishare is developing a holder for the smartphone so that the user has their hands free and can control the app entirely via voice-over or through a remote control.

Runner-up: OOrion

Runner-up Oorion will also further develop their already developed app with our contribution. The current app can locate elements and obstacles in indoor spaces using sounds and vibrations from the smartphone. With the additional financial support from the Bartiméus Fund, Oorion aims to make this app suitable for outdoor use as well.
